Suncorp New Zealand joins Climate Leaders Coalition

20 November 2018

Suncorp New Zealand today announced that it has joined the Climate Leaders Coalition, a collective of 70 New Zealand businesses that are committed to tackling climate change and helping New Zealand transition into a low emissions economy.

“Being part of the Climate Leaders Coalition represents our commitment to view climate change as an opportunity to innovate and create a positive future for New Zealanders,” said Suncorp New Zealand CEO Paul Smeaton.

“Climate change has a direct impact on Suncorp New Zealand’s operations and we have first-hand knowledge of how it is affecting our customers through things like extreme weather events. I am thrilled that we will be collaborating with other businesses to find ways to address climate change.”

As a member of the Climate Leaders Coalition, Suncorp New Zealand has committed to measuring and reporting on its emissions, setting emissions reduction targets and working with its suppliers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

“Climate change will affect everyone in the communities in which we work and live. Insurance plays a part in re-building homes and businesses, but we also want to be part of the solution, through preventing the effects of climate change and creating a more resilient New Zealand,” said Smeaton.

Pip Marlow, CEO Customer Marketplace at Suncorp Group, unveiled Suncorp New Zealand’s commitment at the 2018 Insurance Council of NZ conference today, where climate change was a key theme.

The announcement follows Suncorp New Zealand’s announcement last week that it has joined the Sustainable Business Council as part of its commitment to corporate responsibility and its strategy to create a better today for its stakeholders.
