Air New Zealand is a multi-award winning international airline which delivers uniquely Kiwi journeys to more than 16 million customers who fly to, from and within New Zealand each year. The airline was named 2018 Airline of the Year by AirlineRatings.com for the fifth consecutive year and Top Airline in the World in 2017 by Condé Nast Traveler in its 30th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. The airline operates on average more than 3,500 flights each week, connecting customers to 20 destinations within New Zealand and to international ports across Asia, Europe, Australia, North and South America and the Pacific Islands.
"Climate change is a real, pressing and complex challenge and Air New Zealand is committed to doing everything we can to reduce our climate change impact. I want to see a future New Zealand that takes action on climate change and balances the economic, social and environmental goals we have to really supercharge our success on the world stage. It’s important Kiwi companies see climate change as a critical business issue. With the power of our collective thought, we can be part of the solution for a better New Zealand for future generations."
Christopher Luxon, CEO, AirNew Zealand.
Christopher Luxon has been Chief Executive Officer at Air New Zealand since January 2013 having previously held the role of Group General Manager International Airline for almost two years. Prior to joining the airline, Christopher was President and Chief Executive Officer at Unilever Canada. This was one of several senior leadership roles he held during an 18-year career at the multi-national that saw him work in roles in Europe, North America and Asia/Pacific. Christopher has a Master of Commerce in Business Administration from the University of Canterbury.
Our goal is for Air New Zealand to stabilise emissions through carbon neutral growth post 2020, in a way that simultaneously drives significant environmental, social and economic benefits.
More details here:
Carbon reduction management
Our Fleet
One of the most significant ways to reduce emissions is by operating a modern and efficient fleet. We were the first airline to take delivery of the revolutionary 787-9 Dreamliner in 2014 and we retired our last Boeing 767 aircraft from our fleet in March 2017. As at 30 June 2017, our 103 aircraft have an average seat-weighted age of seven years. Over the next four years we plan to invest approximately $1.5 billion in new and more efficient aircraft.
Fuel efficiency and carbon reduction programme
In 2016, we engaged an independent IATA Operational Efficiency team to conduct an on-site review of our operations, benchmarking our performance against carbon management international best practice.
The average airline carbon reduction measures identified by IATA are 5%. The savings identified for Air New Zealand were much less at 1.46% (approximately 37,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum), which indicates that we are well on the way towards world leading fuel efficiency improvements.
In 2016, we launched a new Carbon Reduction Programme that will enable us to realise further carbon savings.
Recognising significant fuel savings can be made through route optimisation and tailored arrivals and departures, we now engage with external stakeholders including the Civil Aviation Authority and Airways New Zealand as part of our Carbon Reduction Programme to help drive industry-wide initiatives. Senior members of Air New Zealand and Airways New Zealand will oversee the new programme to ensure initiatives are on track.
Sustainable biofuels
Air New Zealand flew one of the aviation industry's first biofuel test flights back in 2008, using a jatropha-derived second generation biofuel, which proved the technical feasibility of using alternative fuels. The test flight also provided supporting data to the subsequent (ASTM) certification of plant based biofuels for commercial airline operations. Industry activity since these early successes has focussed on the development of commercially viable and environmentally sustainable biofuel supply chains utilising a variety of feedstocks. We continue to investigate opportunities, both local and international, to support and potentially procure advanced generation biofuels. We also continue to play an active role in industry bodies such as the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group. We support New Zealand Crown Research Institute SCION in its development of a 'biofuels roadmap' for New Zealand.
Offsetting with Air New Zealand's FlyNeutral carbon offset programme
In addition to the carbon reduction strategies and programmes outlined above, we also now offer the ability for our customers to offset their Air New Zealand flights under our FlyNeutral carbon offset programme.
FlyNeutral supports and encourages our customers to minimise the impact of their air travel on the environment through offsetting the greenhouse gas ('carbon') emissions associated with their Air New Zealand flights.
FlyNeutral makes offsetting easier to understand for all our customers. For our business customers, we have also made understanding, reporting and offsetting air travel-related carbon emissions more efficient, transparent and flexible.
At Air New Zealand, we voluntarily offset the carbon emissions associated with our staff travelling for work on the Air New Zealand network. Join us and offset your Air New Zealand flights with FlyNeutral.
FlyNeutral operates separately to the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme. Funds received from customers for offsetting under the FlyNeutral programme do not go towards our compliance costs associated with the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme - all funds go towards the purchase of additional certified carbon credits. We comply with our obligations under that scheme and manage all compliance requirements at our cost.

This report presents the findings of New Zealand’s first National Climate Change Risk Assessment (NCCRA). The risk assessment gives a national picture of how New Zealand may be affected by climate change-related hazards. It: identifies the most significant risks and opportunities for New Zealand highlights gaps in the information and data needed to properly assess and manage the risks and opportunities. The risk assessment identifies 43 priority risks across five value domains (natural environment, human, economy, built environment and governance) and highlights 10 risks considered to be the most significant. These are risks from that need to be addressed most urgently. The risk assessment will enable the Government to prioritise action, including through a national adaptation plan. The risk assessment will enable the Government to prioritise action, including through a national adaptation plan which will be developed over the next two years. Further detail on the risk assessment's findings are provided in the technical report, and the method report provides more information on the methodology used. There is also a Snapshot which summarises the main report. See links below.

New Zealand on the right track to battle climate change, but COVID-19 stands in the way The third annual IAG New Zealand Ipsos Climate Change opinion poll has found that while New Zealanders are increasingly positive that the government and the country are on the right track to battle climate change, they are concerned the COVID-19 crisis will get in the way. The survey of 1,000 people, commissioned by IAG and conducted by Ipsos Ltd between 18 to 24 June 2020, found that New Zealanders think the Government is doing a better job in responding to climate change and the country is heading in the right direction, but that the response is not moving fast enough.

Last December The Warehouse Group attended the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25) in Madrid. This was at the invitation of Minister for Climate Change, James Shaw, to be part of a New Zealand business delegation. COP is the yearly forum where governments, non-government organisations and businesses progress regulation and drive commitments to combat climate change. We were invited because of our sustainability leadership in New Zealand and to represent the Climate Leaders Coalition, which our group CEO Nick Grayston co-founded, and whose members collectively represent 30% of New Zealand’s GDP, and 60% of New Zealand’s GHG emissions. Both Nick Grayston and I attended COP25 to hear global perspectives on how businesses can address climate change, learn from best-in-class sustainability leaders, and take learnings back to our business and the New Zealand business community at large. As part of our trip we were given the opportunity to share what New Zealand and the Climate Leaders Coalition (CLC) have done here already in the form of a panel discussion in the Blue Moana Pacific Pavilion, which hosted New Zealand and our pacific island neighbours. The panel was introduced by Hon James Shaw and with participation by David Tong from WWF New Zealand, Dr. Ann Smith from Toitu Envirocare, and moderated by Kera O’Regan from Käi Tahu. This paper is part of the process of sharing our learnings. We hope it inspires further climate action.

New Zealanders believe electricity retailers and supermarkets are doing the most to be more sustainable, however, they want brands in all industries to be more open and upfront about sustainability, and actively communicate it. The findings of the In Good Company report released today demonstrate that sustainability is not just something they care about when making a purchase, but it is contributing to how they choose what to buy.
