Business overview
At Ngāi Tahu Tourism our purpose is to help our customers make the connection, through our people, to our place and to Ngāi Tahu. We host more than one million customers a year across more than 25 amazing experiences through our 14 businesses.
These include Shotover Jet, Guided Walks New Zealand, Hollyford Track, Dart River Adventures, Dart Stables, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools, Hukafalls Jet, Agrodome, Rainbow Springs, Queenstown Snowmobiles and Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters. We are also a 50 percent owner in the famous astro-tourism experience Earth & Sky, in Takapō (Lake Tekapo) and have recently entered into a new joint venture with New Zealand Rugby to create an All Blacks Experience scheduled to open in 2020.
Message from Kaihautū (Chief Executive) Quinton Hall
Tourism makes up eight percent of global emissions so it’s important that we work together and explore ways to reduce that figure. We are serious about making changes now to ensure our tamariki and mokopuna can look forward to a prosperous future.
We know there is no easy fix for tackling climate change, but in line with our Ngāi Tahu values of rangatiratanga (leadership) and kaitiakitanga (stewardship), we want our businesses to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to protect our environment.
Sustainability initiatives
Ngāi Tahu Tourism has dedicated resources and expertise to develop plans and projects to reduce emissions, with the goal of achieving a carbon zero target by 2040.
One initiative is pursuing electrification across all businesses, including jet boats at Shotover Jet, Dart River Adventures and Hukafalls Jet.
We’re looking to install electric charge stations in car parks at all Ngāi Tahu Tourism sites and will be investing in electric mini vans in our fleet for shuttle transfers.
Due to the nature of our businesses we need to use paper-based marketing collateral, but are committed to using FSC certified paper stock wherever possible.

Most plastic is made from non-renewable petrochemicals. The extraction process and conversion into plastic releases carbon into the atmosphere, adding to climate change. So in 2014 we challenged ourselves to find a packaging alternative that goes beyond reducing emissions, and actually takes carbon out of the atmosphere. We found a packaging solution that can help to combat climate change. It’s plastic made from sugarcane.

Ecostore has announced that more than 80% of its packaging is made with renewable, sustainable sugar, and thanks to this significant investment, ecostore has helped save 4,485 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere since the company converted its packaging from petrochemical plastic to biobased ‘sugar’ plastic four years ago. The total savings achieved to date are equivalent to the amount of carbon emitted during 8,500 car journeys from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
